The Roman Legion

The ancient Roman emperor gained territory by sending his army on multiple missions that were usually battles. A legion consisted of four thousand to six thousand foot soldiers.

Most legionaries (soldiers) were drafted farmers who could not afford to farm anymore and had to make money some way or another. The average serving time in the army was twenty-five years and the soldier typically did not make it out alive.

If you were part of a legion, you would have to carry more than 32 kilograms of food, tools, and weapons across many kilometers of land. They set up camp then after the night would take all of it down and pack it away. More than once the camp had roads, walls, and towers in it.
